414 - Community- Based Training and the Collection of Subsistence Fisheries Biological Data

Abstract:

With an emphasis on Yukon River village community involvement, development of local research capacity and resource stewardship, subsistence fisheries caught salmon will be sampled for harvest and biological information. Persons from up to 10 Yukon villages will be trained and employed to sample local subsistence catches. Collection of biological information from subsistence catches will help fill a significant information gap while engaging local persons in fisheries research. Information to be collected include: harvest numbers (by species), date of harvest and method, as well as individual fish sex, length, scale, otolith and muscle tissue. These information and biological collections can then be used to characterize subsistence-harvested salmon in terms of age-sex-length, genetic stock of origin, disease prevalence (i.e. Ichthyophonus), and abundance trends. This project will provide useful data to management agencies.

Objectives:

a) To develop training materials to serve as transferable guides for individuals and organizations interested in the collection of biological data on salmon.

b) To train, mentor, and foster up to 30 individuals in the collection of biological fisheries data from up to 10 communities along the Yukon and Koyukuk Rivers.

c) To provide biological data to management agencies on subsistence caught Chinook and Chum Salmon.

d) To enhance the subsistence fisheries database.
